MIGRATIONSVERKET | SVID | SKL | SERVICE DESIGN | KONSTFACK
During the fall of 2015 the world was struck by the worst refugee disaster of our time. Swedish societal institutions was not prepared which led to a massive amount of people getting stuck in refugee housings without any possibility of integration. The refugee reception is based on rigid systems, with a low understanding of the challenges – both practical and emotional – that characterizes a asylum seekers way into society.

DESIGN THINKING | JOURNEY MAPPING
But what if design can offer solutions to improve the reception of refugees and asylum seekers? By applying design methodology in our project, the toolbox ”Enter Sweden” was brought to light, with methods for mapping migration processes from the asylum seekers perspective. The toolbox can help institutions and other organisations to identify challenges and possibilities based on their own functions through out the process from arrival to establishment.

CO-CREATION | EMPATHY | TOOLKIT
The development of the toolbox was made in co-creation between newcomers and public sector. Interviews, videos, journey and experience mapping, clay workshop and iterations where used as methods. The variety of methods used made otherwise inaccessible or underlying information visible. The complex material was processed into understandable tools that can be used by institutions to innovate the refugee reception, where the involvement of the asylum seeker could add that dimension of compassion and empathy that todays systems lack.
